Cottage Trunk Refinishing and Restoration Service

Basic Refinishing and Restoration:

We remove all broken parts that can't be salvaged.

We remove old canvas, damaged leather, down to the bare pine boards. If your trunk is all metal or tin we clean all the metal of rust. Interiors are stripped of old wallpaper or fabric down to bare wood.

All wood including the interior, outside frame and any hardwood slats are carefully cleaned, sanded and detailed without removing its natural character. All wood is given up to five (5) coats of Tung Oil.

All metal is polished to a clean luster. If any metal, including clamps, caps or decorative pieces, are not returning to a nice shine or are in a natural black these will be refinished with premium rust proofing paint.

All polished metal trim and appointments will be given two (2) coats of satin, clear enamel finish.

All metal trunk bodies that cannot be returned to a natural finish, excluding trim, will be painted with a premium rust proofing paint, in your color choice, with a moderate hammer finish. Colors will be recommended.

All minor repairs will be made if possible, otherwise new parts will be ordered at additional cost. All loose trunk nails will be removed and replaced.

Total cost for the work stated above is $350.00. (We don't charge extra for paint, Tung Oil, nails or general supplies used in the above stated work.

PLEASE NOTE: If your trunk is of the wardrobe variety with draws on the inside please add $100.00 to the cost as this requires additional detail and time to individually clean and refinish each draw and the inside. If your not sure about the type of trunk you have please contact us with a picture or two and we'll identify the style for you.

If you are not local to The Glass Cottage (Eastern, Ohio 44601) it costs upwards of $130.00 to ship trunks from most Continental U.S. locations. We recommend UPS Stores and they charge $30-$45 to package your trunk, but it is worth the time and trouble in addition to having it done correctly. This is a one-way fee, so keep that in mind, we need to get your finished trunk back to you.

Shipping costs do vary so use UPS Stores if you decide to ship to The Glass Cottage.

We try to keep our costs down to make shipping an option to have your trunk restored or refinished correctly and to keep your investment a treasured and enduring possession.

Repairs and Replacements will be decided upon before any restoration order is submitted. All parts prices are quoted at cost; there is no markup for these items.

Extra Fees: If your trunk has been painted and needs stripping (with chemicals) there is a $50.00 fee.

If your trunk lock works and only needs a key we may be able to remove it and have keys (2) made. The cost $25.00. If I have a key in stock that fits the cost will be $7.50

Color Guide: We used Rustoleum hammered finish paint because it leaves a look that would typically have the older patina of antique metal when the original finish won't polish to a nice luster from years of weathering, use and abuse. Here are the available colors. (Sorry, we can't use substitutes.) Colors vary in different lighting; the color swatches are guides only.

Full payment is due via PayPal before your finished trunk is shipped back to you. Financing is not available but you may make payments during the time we have your trunk. Upon email notification advising your trunk is finished full payment is due within five (5) business days.

If your full payment is not received within 10 business days of your email notification we reserve the right to list and sell your trunk online or by other means available to recover our costs.

NOTE: We do not wallpaper or install fabric to trunk interiors nor do we add leather or canvas to exteriors. All exposed wood is treated with several coats of premium Tung Oil only. We will not use lacquer (only on metal parts to protect finish), shellac, varnish, and polyethurane type products on any portion of your trunk.

SHIPPING TRUNKS :

We will refinish and or restore your old trunk if your willing ship your item to us in Ohio via UPS. Please remember you pay for shipping both ways. We supply the packing for return shipments.

IMPORTANT: Shipping Guidelines from UPS 

If you live within a 75-mile radius of Zip Code 44601 (Alliance, OHIO) we will pick up and redeliver your trunk for $45.00. 100 - 125 miles $65.00 rountrip. Beyond 125 miles we would recommend shipping or we must charge $.25 per mile for each mile over 125 miles pickup and delivery. (Check here for distance or directions)

How Long Will It Take: We try to stay efficient and not take more trunks in than we can handle. An estimate (long-range) is 4-5 weeks; we try to finish in 3 weeks or less however. If we have to order parts there could be a slight delay but this is unusual. Please keep in mind if we are currently working on an order or have jobs lined up the time to begin work on your trunk may take longer. At the time of an order we let the customer know what we have as work-in-progress and provide an estimate of when work will begin on the newest orders. We appreciate your patience.

This service is for regular steamer trunks only. We do not restore wardrobe trunks as the shipping requirements are usually prohibitive and require freight charges. We will, however, consider wardrobe trunk restoration for local (75 mile radius) customers. We do not have a receiving department; therefore, we can't have trunks dropped off at our location. We will accept UPS shipments.
